ATC is committed to securing training and employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in the Mid West and Gascoyne regions.
We employ a dedicated Industry Consultant, Allan (Cobber) Headland to run our Indigenous programs and mentor the apprentices and trainees. Cobber regularly gets out into the community servicing areas including Mullewa, Three Springs, Mingenew, Mount Magnet, Cue, Meekatharra and Geraldton.
Our two main programs are Aboriginal School-based Traineeships and MTG Builders.
Aboriginal School-based Traineeships
Cobber actively encourages Indigenous (and non-Indigenous) high school students throughout the region to complete school-based traineeships. He matches students with traineeships that suit their interests and seeks work placements in supportive environments. Cobber provides ongoing mentoring to help the students complete their traineeships and be work ready when they finish high school.
MTG Builders – Indigenous Carpentry Apprenticeships

MTG Builders and Apprenticeship & Traineeship Co are both trading companies of Mid West Training Group Inc. MTG Builders was set up as a registered builder in 1996 to directly employ Indigenous youth to undertake carpentry apprenticeships while building Homes West homes in Geraldton.
The program was designed to assist Indigenous people gain their trade qualification in an environment that shows compassion and understanding to their cultural needs and environments. It also aims to address the under-representation of Aboriginal people in the building and construction industry.

The program was the first of its type in WA and since its inception MTG has commenced more than 40 Indigenous apprentices and trainees and completed the building of 48 dwellings.
Our vision was to create a sense of achievement through hard work and commitment, and for participants in the projects to eventually become role models to their peers.
Cobber recruits and mentors the participants alongside their employer MTG Building Supervisor, Andrew Benzie.
